What Does Passive Fire Protection Mean?

Welcome to the post written by the fire protection technicians working at Advanced Firestop Solutions, LLC. Here you will read more about how to protect your building and its occupants. Passive protection is one of 2 kinds of protection systems when it comes to fires. Passive protection systems are made so they contain both fire and smoke to a specific area and to slow down the burn rate in a building. Prime examples of such protection can include materials and chemicals which are both fire retardant and fire-resistant.

Unlike active protection, the passive kind is not meant to extinguish fires; instead, these measures are to slow down fires and try to restrict the damage to smaller spaces. Thus, reducing or slowing down the spread of flames and smoke, to give people more time to evacuate. It can limit physical or structural damage also to a building. In contrast, an active protection system is in place to detect and extinguish fires. Good examples of these include alarm systems, smoke and fire detectors, and automatic sprinklers.

Fire retardant materials resist the spread of fire. For example, drywall that contains gypsum considered a passive protection material. Gypsum is plaster or calcium sulfate hemihydrate. And has high water content and releases water vapor when it is exposed to extreme heat, which in turn will slow down the burn rate.

Other passive fire protection products range from fire doors, fire stops, and fire dampers. A fire stop is a seal that is placed around the likes of wall joints, doors, ceilings, or ducts. Products made from a substance known as intumescent are regularly used as fire stops. This is because intumescent swells several times its normal size when exposed to high temperatures, which will stop the spread of fire and smoke.
